In the Kitchen
The refrigerator is one of the hungriest energy users because it must run full time. You can economize by adjusting the temperature controls. The freezer section should be set to about 5 degrees Fahrenheit (5F). If it’s running colder than that, you are over-cooling and it’s costing you money. Place a thermometer in the freezer and let it stay there overnight. In the morning see what it tells you and, if it’s too low, adjust the control a little. Freezers work best when the compartment is fairly full, although you still need air to be able to circulate for don’t put in so much that you interfere with that. The refrigerator compartment should operate at around 38F. Measure it too, and adjust if it’s set too low. As a final suggestion, twice a year, move the refrigerator away from the wall and check out the coils on the back (assuming your model has them there). If the coils are have a lot of dust and cobwebs, give them a good cleaning. Doing this allows the unit to vent heat more effectively, which will make it more efficient.
Now, think about that your dishwasher. There are some easy features that, when properly used, will save you money. The first is the “heated dry” feature. If your dishwasher has this option, make sure that it is turned off. Do the same for the pre-rinse feature.
In the Laundry
The clothes dryer is a big energy user for most households. Using its energy-saving features can save you significant amounts on your utility bill, whether you have electric or gas. If the dryer has a moisture sensor, make sure that you use it rather than just a timed setting. Overdrying your clothes will just wear them out faster. Having good air flow in the dryer is very important for efficiency. To ensure good flow, always clean the lint filter. You should also inspect the dryer’s exhaust outlets periodically to ensure that they aren’t clogged with lint. Not only is a clogged duct a fire hazard, but it also makes the dryer is working too hard to do its job. Also, make sure the ducts have a minimum number of 90 degree turns in them. The straighter they are, the easier it is for the dryer to operate. Whenever you can, do multiple loads back to back; if the unit is already hot you’ll save some by not wasting that heat. Far and away the best thing to do, of course, is to use a clothesline. That’s using solar power.
Now for the washing machine. Most of the energy that your washing machine uses is expended in heating the water. To minimize energy use, avoid using warm or hot water. Detergents these days work well even with cold water. Hot water doesn’t kill any bacteria or sanitize the wash, (That would take boiling water, and washing machines don’t do that) so only use it if the clothes are badly stained or particularly dirty. If the washing machine has a load size setting, as most do, use it to minimize the amount of water you use per wash. This is particularly important if you’re using hot water.
Saving energy and saving money are concerns for everyone. When you’re looking for home insurance coverage, click the link to find out about an approach to consider.

Termite Damage and Real Estate
